PROMOTING INCLUSION IN COMPETITION

Ann Yoshida, the first competitive adaptive surfing female is fulfilling a life long dream embarking on an adaptive surfing world tour to promote women in sport and inclusion in competition.

As a native Hawaiian female adaptive surfing world champion, she will collaborate and organize adaptive surfing clinics for each nation she visits to fulfill her mission and promote sustainable adaptive surfing programing in each country.

Ann has studied adaptive surfing in her doctorate in occupational therapy and promotes inclusion in her work with AccesSurf as their innovation and training coordinator.

EMPOWERING WOMEN IN SPORT

PROMOTING INCLUSION IN COMPETITION

In 2007 Ann was the only female competing in exhibition heats around the United States to say that adaptive surfing is possible and it can be a competitive sport. Back then, she dreamt that she would go on the ASP world tour but found there were too many social and physical barriers to make that a reality in the early days. Little did she know, a decade and some later, she would be making an impact by developing and going on an adaptive surfing world tour to empower women in sport and promote inclusion in competition.

As a native to Hawai‘i, Ann Yoshida has a deep cultural love for water sports. The ocean has always played an identity building role in her life. After being paralyzed in February of 2000, she learned to access her life to its fullest potential as an athlete, professional, and through her work in community development.

Ann found her identity as a water woman in adaptive surfing and paddling. As an elite athlete, she achieved numerous goals and won prestigious awards, including as a Paralympian, World Champion in paracanoe, two-time World Adaptive Surfing Champion and inductee into the Hawai‘i Watermen Hall of Fame with other renown watermen such as Duke Kahanamoku and Rell Sunn.

Please join her in spreading the Aloha by empowering women in sport and promoting inclusion in competition. You can help by donating below, volunteering gear and services toward the logistics of the world tour or sharing the message to all that you know.
